Job Description

Job Title: Tunnels and Construction Health and Safety Advisor – Shift Location: Central London / Battersea Project: Thames Tideway Day and night shifts Role Overview and objectives Responsible for providing the C405 project with advice on H&S matters and in particular guiding the construction and tunnels team throughout the construction: -Promoting health and safety throughout the Project; -Advising managers and operatives of good practice; -Manage the operational health & safety requirements of C405 -Ensure project compliance with statutory legislation and contractual safety requirements indicated in the Works Information. -Undertake onsite inspection and monitoring of health and safety. Promote: o FLO Health & Safety Policy o RightWay o Next Gear Life -Ensure that all accidents and dangerous occurrences are thoroughly investigated and reported detailing causes, conclusions and recommendations to avoid recurrence and compile reports using internal systems. -Deliver Tool Box Talks and Induction Training as required. -Assist in the identification of safety training needs for site based personnel and bring these to the attention of managers and training department. -Participate in the provision of staff training as directed by the head of health and safety. -Support site based safety personnel in delivering their safety responsibilities. -Assist in the provision of safety training for site operatives. -Provide site personnel with advice, support and encouragement in order that they may fulfil their duties effectively. -Co-operate with the Health and Safety Executive in connection with their site visits -Assist in the production of health related risk assessments. -Keep abreast of health and safety legislation. -Suggest, communicate and promote initiatives for accident prevention. -Set a personal example of safe behaviour Responsibilities Safety: The post holder must comply with sections 7 and 8 of the Health and Safety at Work Act: -To take reasonable care for the safety of themselves and of any other person who may be affected by what they do or fail to do at work -To co-operate with their employers or any other persons in the performance of their statutory duties -Not to misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare -The post holder must also comply with the requirements of FLO’s H&S Policy and co-operate with FLO in its efforts to prevent accidents and ill health. In particular the post holder will: -Read and comply with the project rules -Develop and demonstrate a personal concern for the health and safety of themselves and others -Report all accidents, incidents and near misses to their line manager or health and safety manager as appropriate. -Report damage to plant and equipment to the immediate supervisor -Use only that plant and equipment for which they have received training and authorization -Use and look after the protective equipment provided and report to their supervisor when it becomes worn or defective -Ensure that any personal injuries are recorded in the accident book -Propose to their immediate supervisor ways of eliminating hazards and improving safety at their workplace -Attend health surveillance when instructed -Set a personal example of safe behaviour Environment Quality Client/Communication Commercial Engineering/Planning Accountabilities Shift Health and safety Leads are accountable to the Head of Health & Safety and responsible to the Tunnels and Construction Health and Safety Manager for the promotion of safe and healthy working practices and for monitoring the implementation of FLO policy and procedures. In particular they will: -Advise managers and supervisors at FLO sites, depots and offices of statutory health and safety requirements. -Provide assistance in the preparation of risk assessments and in the development of project management plans. -Provide support in their role as a FLO representative with respect to the principal contractor’s duties under CDM. -Regularly inspect FLO work locations and activities, preferably accompanied by a senior member of the site operations team. -Identify hazards and risk -Verify that temporary works procedures are implemented safely. -Submit inspection reports to the Agent with copies to the relevant business unit manager and health and safety manager. -Promote and use the Next Gear Life Tools (engagement tools) People responsibility None Experience & Knowledge Details of experience and knowledge: -Have experience of working on major heavy, civil engineering projects and must have some demonstrable tunnelling experience and major lifting operations. -Working knowledge of current UK Health and Safety legislation and best practice -Experience of delivering training modules -Knowledge of a variety of occupational environments, such as confined spaces and arrangement of equipment. -Knowledge of safety devices to use in conjunction with tools and equipment in the workplace. Advantageous -Tunneling hyperbaric experience -Computer literate with experience of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook General Skills and Qualifications: -The role will require the post holder to have excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal -NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate -Ability to evaluate safety practices, procedures, programs, attitudes and awareness and to recommend methods of improvement. -Ability to maintain favorable public relations. -Ability to maintain records and prepare reports -CSCS card -Tunnel Safety Card PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS JOB DESCRIPTION DOES NOT REPRESENT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF ACTIVITES AND EMPLOYEES MAYBE REQUESTED TO UNDERTAKE OTHER REASONABLE DUTIES.
